he Datong Gate was originally constructed in the 29th year of the Yuan Dynasty's Zhiyuan era (1292). During the Yuan Dynasty, Guo Shoujing excavated the Tonghui River and installed multiple sluice gates along the route to manage water level differences, with the Datong Gate being one of them. This gate was the first sluice east of the capital city of Yuan Dynasty, initially named "Weicun Gate" and commonly referred to by locals as the "First Gate." It is located at the intersection of Dongcheng and Chaoyang districts and also at the corner of the southeastern moat of Yuan Dynasty's capital, serving as a crucial point on the Tonghui River. The gate was demolished during the construction of the subway in the 1960s and was converted into an underground river bridge at the sluice opening. Currently, three remaining water-watching beast sculptures are installed on the subsequently built bridge.
